The legacy of the Black Panther Party’s commitment to community health care, a central aspect of its fight for social justice Alondra Nelson recovers a lesser-known aspect of The Black Panther Party’s broader struggle for social justice: health care. Nelson argues that the Party’s focus on health care was practical and ideological and that their understanding of health as a basic human right and its engagement with the social implications of genetics anticipated current debates about the politics of health and race. In Body and Soul, Alondra Nelson combines careful research, deep political insight, and passionate commitment to tell the little-known story of the Black Panther Party's health activism in the late 1960s. In doing so, and in showing how the problems of poverty, discrimination, and access to medical care remain hauntingly similar more than forty years later, Nelson reminds us that the struggle continues, particularly for African Americans, and that social policies have profound moral implications. 'Body and Soul' is a popular song and jazz standard written in 1930 with lyrics by Edward Heyman, Robert Sour and Frank Eyton; and music by Johnny Green. Mar 10, 2017 On Body and Soul Director: Ildiko Enyedi FILMARTI 2017. Between its founding in 1966 and its formal end in 1980, the Black Panther Party blazed a distinctive trail in American political culture. The Black Panthers are most often remembered for their revolutionary rhetoric and militant action. Here Alondra Nelson deftly recovers an indispensable but lesser-known aspect of the organization’s broader struggle for social justice: health care. The Black Panther Party’s health activism—its network of free health clinics, its campaign to raise awareness about genetic disease, and its challenges to medical discrimination—was an expression of its founding political philosophy and also a recognition that poor blacks were both underserved by mainstream medicine and overexposed to its harms. Drawing on extensive historical research as well as interviews with former members of the Black Panther Party, Nelson argues that the Party’s focus on health care was both practical and ideological. Building on a long tradition of medical self-sufficiency among African Americans, the Panthers’ People’s Free Medical Clinics administered basic preventive care, tested for lead poisoning and hypertension, and helped with housing, employment, and social services. In 1971, the party launched a campaign to address sickle-cell anemia. In addition to establishing screening programs and educational outreach efforts, it exposed the racial biases of the medical system that had largely ignored sickle-cell anemia, a disease that predominantly affected people of African descent. The Black Panther Party’s understanding of health as a basic human right and its engagement with the social implications of genetics anticipated current debates about the politics of health and race. That legacy—and that struggle—continues today in the commitment of health activists and the fight for universal health care. This book is a revelation. Alondra Nelson uncovers two remarkable histories in Body and Soul. First, she provides the deep context for our current conversation about the health disparities that plague the African-American community and that are, as she puts it, ‘quite literally sickening.’ Second, she adds immeasurably to our knowledge of the Black Panther Party, complicating its commonplace designation as a radical, militant organization to unearth its dedication and hard work in advocating for and providing equal and quality health care for even the most underserved African Americans. Nelson is the first scholar I know of to bring these two histories into dialogue with each other, and she does so with spectacular results. This is a tremendously important book. I’m a college freshman and I recently had a confrontational disagreement with my English professor regarding an R-rated film. It is her favorite movie and she wanted to show it in class. I went to your Web site to research the film’s content. Although I had not seen the movie myself, I was able to make an educated argument against it based on the concerns you outlined. The prof said that she was impressed by my stand and decided to poll the whole class and give us a choice. We overwhelmingly voted to watch a G-rated movie instead! Wrongly accused of stealing sneakers, Stanley Yelnats is sentenced to 18 months at Camp Green Lake correctional facility. The boys there dig holes daily in the hot sun, supposedly to 'build character' — but Stanley soon discovers the warden is actually hunting for a treasure tied to Stanley's ancestors. As he masters his digging skills and rescues a fellow inmate, Stanley's self-confidence grows. He also discovers the treasure may be closer than anyone realizes. Flashback tales about Stanley's family history are woven through his Camp Green Lake experiences. The warden and counselors at Camp Green Lake call the boys stupid, withhold water from them as they work in the hot sun, and sometimes even hurt them enough to draw blood. In one scene, these adults are prepared to shoot Stanley and his friend, Zero, in order to acquire the treasure. X-Ray, one of the young inmates, is leader of the boys in Stanley's unit; he makes decisions including what order the boys stand in to get water each day. Stanley's parents, though they show up mainly in Stanley's memory, are kind and supportive. He lies to them in his letters so they won't worry about him. Is ball exit speed important? Scout day arrives and one of the stations set up is a tee station that will measure ball exit speed. If on scout day there is a measurement that measures ball exit speed off a batting tee then why isn’t this measurement worked on more often? Many players arrive at scout day or at college showcase events having not worked on exit speed all year but arrive hoping they achieve a great number. The real question the becomes is ball exit speed a significant measurement or simply a waste of time for coaches and players? Before we address the importance or lack of importance of ball exit speed let’s first look at exit speed at the MLB level. According to hittracker.com the top ball exit speed of a MLB player in 2014 was 119.9 MPH of course off a wooden bat. When you research further it appears that every home run hit in 2014 was hit 90mph or more off the bat with the exception of two that were 88-90mph. According to hit tracker a ball hit at 90mph is going to travel roughly 300 feet. Mike Trout hit 36 home runs with an average speed off the bat at 104.6mph and a average distance of 412.5. My question is if ball exit speed with good ball flight obviously impacts the distance of the baseball then why are most coaches not taking this measurement seriously? Right now in my opinion ball exit speed is simply something to do or a time killer for the few coaches that are doing it right now. A small few take it very seriously. I found it very interesting that the pro hitters we have come into Fastball USA near Chicago have all picked up a wood bat and hit the ball around 100mph off the batting tee. Once again, my question is why are coaches not focusing on measuring and improving this number. The proof shows most home runs are hit around 100mph. Why not then work on it? Even baseball showcases and scout days have added ball exit speed as a measurement done at these events. My question is do these showcases and scouts in general feel this is a good measurement or simply something to do to keep players busy? A few players that I have spoken to reported that ball exit speed is a measurement done on scout day but the rest of the year they NEVER train or get feedback on ball exit speed. I don’t know about you but to me if your going to be tested on ball exit speed on a scout day or a showcase, then I would want ball exit speed training a regular part of my training routine. The real question is why are coaches not implementing more ball exit speed feedback in practices? What is the real reason? I have a few theories and I’m sure many of you have more. Theory # 1 By working on ball exit speed too much it will only interrupt or ruin the swing of a young player. This means if a player is in search of more ball exit speed than he will ruin his technique because the technique will get sloppy. This group feels that the technique drives results. Citizen America CT-S801S3ETUBKP CT-S801 Series POS Thermal Printer with PNE Sensor, Top Exit, 300 mm/Sec Printing Speed, IEEE1284 Ethernet Connection, Black. Aug 03, 2009 On Christmas Eve, ten passengers board a bus traveling across Texas. Most are heading for home, family and friends. Some are in search of new jobs. Short Description. Exit Speed (2008). On Christmas Eve, ten strangers board a bus traveling across Texas. Far out in the wilds they collide with a meth-addicted biker. I can assure you from my experience that it’s quite the opposite. The intent to hit hard, and the intent to hit far, is exactly what creates better technique. I know you might think I’m crazy, but intent is a huge reason why Fastball USA has now had 11 players reach speeds of 100mph or more in hitting or throwing. Theory # 2 Most just don’t care about hitting power. The reality is coaches need players to put the ball in play. Getting on base, and making contact is most important and we don’t need to focus on hitting power. This group in my opinion also believes that either you have hitting power or you don’t. This group may have also given up because of the BBCORE factor, and the idea that small is most important. In my experience hitting power can be developed and improved but hitting power is driven through goal or intent. The intent or goal to hit hard is crucial. Here are some key factors that have led to 11 players (almost all in high school) who have attained 100mph of ball exit speed. We have also had another 64 players hit a baseball 90mph or more and an 11 year old hit a baseball 84mph. Ironically last years 7 th round Draft Pick by the Indians (Simeon Lucas) who attended our camps is 101mph and many others at the 100mph mark are playing high level college baseball. Here are 4 principles Of The Explosive Hitting System at Fastball USA: • Master The Mission. The intent to hit hard and hit far. After every single swing our hitters ask 2 questions. First, did I hit the ball hard? Second, did the ball have good flight? We let the goal drive our mechanics not the other way around. • Master the Mindset. The mindset is be aggressive and when it doubt be more aggressive. Embrace failure during training. Failure and looking bad is an option. Fear of looking bad should not exist when developing hitters. Our hitters have a blast. • Measure The Mission. Find ways such as ball exit speed and ball flight to objectively measure everything in your training. Our top measurements include bat speed, ball exit speed, ball flight, and% of hard hit balls in bp. On the field we measure distance off a tee, distance in soft toss, and distance in bp. Measure the mission and then make sure everyone is recording the results. By recording the result the hitter is more likely to make changes as needed. • Become a Master at Adjustments. Pay attention to the results and then adapt and adjust. Great hitters pay attention to the results of ball flight and if they hit the ball hard and then adjust. Much of our program is guiding players on paying attention to the result and then adapting and adjusting. At the end of the day your players need to become their own best hitting coach. According to hittracker.com it is reported that every 1mph of ball exit speed increased will add as much as 5 feet of distance. Add 10mph and your hitter has increased an average of 50 feet of distance. That is huge! Can you imagine how many balls are hit less than 50 feet away from a fence in any given season and how that would change the game. Since BBCORE became an issue I have seen coaches simply accept power is not the future of the game. Power is something that can be developed through the right intent, the right mindset, along with the right environment. For players if your going to showcases in which ball exit speed will be tracked then you better make ball exit speed training a regular part of your practice. For teams who are putting players in front of scouts on scout day, it only makes sense to train ball exit speed to better prepare your players for this event. For the player who simply wants to improve power I would start measuring your exit speed today. Take boring tee work and make it a game. Compete with yourself. Compete with your team members. If you need to hit a baseball 90mph minimum to hit a ball 300 feet, then get after it and start working on it. For those who also believe that the pitcher supplies the power, and that hitters don’t need to focus on hitting hard you should re-visit this thought process. The ball that Giancarlo Stanton hit at 119.9mph was a on a slow curve ball. He supplied the majority of the power. If hitters can train themselves to supply the power then you won’t have to rely on the pitcher doing it for you. The general rule of thumb is most people believe power is something you have and really can’t be developed. Someone with a 90mph arm was born to throw 90. Someone with extreme hitting power was born to hit with power. At Fastball USA we dismiss this freak theory concept and believe power can be generated. The one thing scouts believe is that power is innate. If I’m a player I want to out power everyone. Javier Baez of the Chicago Cubs obviously needs to make more contact. The reality is he is playing major league baseball because of his unusual power. He will stay there if he hit’s the ball hard more often. The question is where do you stand on ball exit speed. • Is it a significant part of your hitting practice • Do you measure it but more as something fun to do • Do you believe it’s all about the technique and ball exit speed measuring is a waste of time? • Have you been curious but not sure if it will help your hitters? Ball exit speed Benefits # 1 Establishes the hitters overall power ability # 2 Improves the hitters overall power ability # 3 Create a culture of achievement in your practice # 4 Create a culture of competition in your practice # 5 Create a culture of having fun while hitting # 6 Inside the limits of a batting cage you don’t get distance feedback. Ball Exit Speed gives inside the cage hitting a chance for hitters to get a better feel of how far the ball might have gone. My Suggestion - Have players figure out their average scores and high ball exit speed scores at the start off the off-season. Then have them set short term and long term goals. A great short term goal is to add 1mph every 30 days. The goal is to see 10-12mph in 10-12 months. Once again creating the environment and culture of achievement. The secret Sauce (Additional Tip) Don’t just measure ball exit speed. Have your players recording each and every number. Have them Write every reading down! Get them interested not only in what their high scores are but also get them interested in what the average score is to reinforce consistency. In addition to ball exit speed recording have them diagram where every ball is hit throughout the batting cage. They can label each hit with the speed associated with the hit to help create awareness of where the ball is going and how hard the ball is hit in that direction. Create Categories - Category A - Wooden Bat Exit Speed Category B - Game Bat or aluminum Ball Exit Speed Category C - Oppo Ball Exit Speed Category D - Pull Side Ball Exit Speed Other Categories - Over Load Bat Ball Exit Speed Numbers Under Load Bat Ball Exit Speed Numbers Weighted Ball Exit Speed Number The different categories helps create an environment in which your training never get’s old or stale. The different categories also gives players multiple opportunities to set high scores or improve average scores. This creates motivation in the training environment. For those who simply have just decided that they don’t have the caliber of players that can drive the ball you will also need to re-think your stance. In my opinion this makes improving ball exit speed and overall power even more important. The two things our hitters are obsessed about is what I believe matters the most. They are focused on hitting each ball as hard has possible, and paying attention to ball flight. Now go out and hit harder this year! The Author - Mike Ryan is owner and CEO of the Fastball USA Training Center in Schaumburg,IL and i n 2015 he will be releasing his book “Creating The 100mph Hitter” on Amazon.com. It's Christmas Eve and ten people board a bus travelling across Texas. Marathon runner Maudie McMinn (Lea Thompson), High School soccer coach Jerry (Gregory Jbara) and Corporal Merideth Cole (Julie Mond) are among those heading home to visit family and friends, some in search of new jobs and some just looking for a fresh start. On a deserted section of highway, the bus collides with a nomadic biker wired on crystal meth. But when the passengers go to his aid, he opens fire on the bus and in terrified self-defense they retaliate and kill the crazed gunman. With the murder being witnessed by the rest of his biker gang, the bus is ambushed and forced off the road. The passengers take refuge in an abandoned wrecking yard and watching in horror, they soon find themselves surrounded by the ferocious pack of knife and gun wielding lunatics. -- (C) 2020 Films •. Considering that this is an independent production, Exit Speed is a surprising film. Though not excellent by any means, Exit Speed is a terrific accomplishment with a surprising good cast of actors. It's clear that Exit Speed take it's influence from the Mad Max and first Speed films, but it's a film that fairly well done, despite the fact that is a strong influence of those films. Theres plenty of good things going on in the film to keep you interested. Though the plot is not too original, theres nonetheless a good story displayed here. The cast of actors of well known actors are Fred Ward from Tremors series, Lea Thompson from Back To The Future and Red Dawn and Desmond Harrington from tv's Dexter. After a bus collides with a meth addicted biker, a meth addicted biker gang seeks out revenge on the group of passengers traveling on the bus. What follows is an action packed thrill ride. Exit Speed is clearly a B movie, but is very well made considering that. The film does have a good, simple story, and it has decent enough acting. Nothing too special, but nothing awful either. Exit Speed is a surprising film because, honestly, I did not expect anything good out of this film, but I finished it and I was very impressed with. Sure there are things that could have been improved upon. But considering that this film was made by an independent studio and small time director; you have to give this film credit in delivering something interesting on screen. Really the ony thing that they could've changed was the soundtrack, which totally sucked. The films soundtrack sounded like it was made using a Casio keyboard. The films simple story of passengers fighting against a ruthless biker gang is pretty effective and shows that you don't need anything elaborate to create pulse pounding action. This is by far the best 1 star movie I've ever seen. Maybe I shouldn't say best because it would imply there's something positive about the entire experience or that I learned something, but it's probably the most fun I've had watching a bad movie in a while. I gave this movie the same score I gave the ABHORRENT Frankenstein (1994 version) and technically that movie was better since it had a better budget, better cast (I would say it was better shot but that movie was pretty poorly filmed) but it also pretended to be a better movie than it actually was and therefore it failed on almost EVERY level possible. To use a metaphor, and a very poor one at that, this movie should have been aborted at a movie abortion clinic. Taking a look at the plot synopsis for this film, you can't help but laugh at the absurdity of it. Therefore, since this wasn't meant to be taken seriously, I could just relax, enjoy and laugh at the unintentional comedy. This movie doesn't pretend to be something it's not (like Frankenstein 1994) so it takes the edge off and I was never looking for things to criticize about the movie itself. There IS a lot to criticize, but you know what? I'm not going to bother because it would be pointless and in reality I was entertained by the movie and it held my interest for 90 minutes. It's still a bad movie, but it's a good bad movie. It's just a low-budget thriller flick and I can never really hate a low-budget thriller. Another thing, it's very apparent, that Lea Thompson is at a level so far above the rest of the actors in this movie it's not even funny. And Fred Ward is just a cool old man. That's about it, if you like bad movies, then this one is definitely recommended for its unintentional comedy and just plain absurdity of the plot. If you only want to watch good movies, well then you're sucking up the wrong teat here.did I just say that??? In a nutshell, 'Exit Speed' is a thriller about a group of passengers travelling to Texas when, on the way, they are attacked by a murderous biker gang. Forced off the road, the passengers take refuge in an abandoned wrecking yard. As they watch in horror, the bikers surround the place before sending one of their own to bring back the rest of the pack. While the remaining bikers launch probing attacks, the passengers rely on improvised weapons and sheer guts to mount a defense. Their numbers dwindling, the passengers realize they must do the unthinkable in order to survive. But I do know there is time and some resources spent on development. That’s all I can tell ya.” Again National Treasure 3 is on top of search results. This is not due to new updates related to this movie, but due to the kind nature of Nicolas Cage. As we all know that Nicolas Cage, star of National Treasure, loves precious historical artifacts. This is the reason that he has a large collection of heritage. In his collection, there is a skull of a Tyrannosaurus bataar, one of the species of Tyrannosaurus, which he purchased in 2007 from I.M. Chait Gallery of Los Angeles for $276,000. After that, Homeland Department of Security, contacted Nicolas Cage, and told him that this skull belongs to Mongolia and it was illegally taken from there. Then Nicolas came forward to hand over this skull to Mongolia. Meanwhile, Preet Bharara, Manhattan U.S. Attorney, filed a petition against it. I am also waiting for National Treasure 3 like millions fan. I wish production work of this movie will finish as fast as it can, so that fans will not have to wait for it too long. For more updates related to National Treasure 3 and, stay tuned with us. National Treasure Trailer. Here is a movie about a fabled ancient treasure from the Middle East, protected through the ages by the Knights Templar and the Masons, and hidden for centuries until a modern investigator follows a series of baffling clues that lead him first to a priceless work in a national gallery, and then to a hiding place beneath an ancient church. If you are one of the millions, like me, who plowed through The Da Vinci Code, you can be forgiven for thinking they've made it into a movie. And in a way, they have, but the movie is titled 'National Treasure.' This new production is so similar in so many ways to the plot of the best seller that either (a) the filmmakers are the only citizens of the entertainment industry who have never heard of The Da Vinci Code, no, not even while countless people on the set must have been reading the book, or (b) they have ripped it off. My attorneys advise me that (a) is the prudent answer. That I have read the book is not a cause for celebration. It is inelegant, pedestrian writing in service of a plot that sets up cliff-hangers like clockwork, resolves them with improbable escapes and leads us breathlessly to a disappointing anticlimax. I should read a potboiler like The Da Vinci Code every once in a while, just to remind myself that life is too short to read books like The Da Vinci Code. The Da Vinci movie, set for 2005, will be directed by, who should study this one for clues about what to avoid. The central weakness of the story is the absurdity of the clues, which are so difficult that no sane forefather could have conceivably believed that anyone could actually follow them. That the movie's hero, named Benjamin Franklin Gates and played by, is able to intuitively sense the occult meanings of ancient riddles and puzzles is less a tribute to his intelligence than to the screenplay supplying him with half a dozen bonus A-ha! Moment, you will recall, is that moment at which a movie character suddenly understands something which, if he did not understand it, would bring the entire enterprise to a halt. Benjamin Franklin Gates is named, of course, after the famous software millionaire. His family of historians has been scorned for generations because of its belief that a vast treasure was brought back from the Crusades by the Knights Templar and has been hidden by the Masons -- in this case, Masons who were the Founding Fathers of America. Benjamin's father, Patrick Henry Gates (played by and named after O. Henry), scoffs at the family legend, but his grandfather John Adams Gates (played by and named after the inventor of the toilet) gives Benjamin a clue handed down through the generations from Charles Carroll, the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence. This clue, which involves the word 'Charlotte,' seems baffling until Benjamin has an A-Ha! And leads an expedition north of the Arctic Circle in search of a 19th century sailing ship which, he calculates, must have frozen in the ice and then been shifted miles inland by the gradual movement of the floes. To say the expedition finds the ship without much trouble is putting it mildly; Benjamin digs about a foot down into the permafrost, and then bends over and wipes clean a brass nameplate that helpfully says 'Charlotte.' Clues on the ship lead him to believe the map to the treasure may be written in invisible ink on the back of the Declaration of Independence -- a safe place for it, because such a document would be guarded down through the ages. Of course there is the problem of convincing the National Archives to allow you to remove the Declaration from its vacuum-sealed vault and molest it with lemon juice and a hair dryer. Luckily the National Archivist, Dr. Abigail Chase (), named after her scenes in the movie, is convinced by Benjamin, and together they team up to steal the Declaration before the villain () can steal it first. After many chases and close calls and quick thinking and fast footwork and hanging from swinging doors and leaping chasms, etc., the heroes find themselves in a collapsing mine shaft beneath a church tomb -- a shaft that must have been created secretly, although it seems roughly the size of Boston's Big Dig. Whether they're on a wild goose chase or find the fortune of the ages, I will leave for you to discover. I understand why it is necessary, in The Da Vinci Code, to conceal information associated with the Holy Grail, but I am less convinced, in 'National Treasure,' that the treasure had to be hidden because it was so vast that if all that wealth came suddenly into the world it would, I dunno, capsize the economy or cause the brains of accountants to explode. Cage, one of my favorite actors, is ideal for this caper because he has the ability to seem uncontrollably enthusiastic about almost anything., who plays FBI agent Sadusky, falls back on his ability to seem grim about almost anything. Jon Voight calls on his skill at seeming sincere at the drop of a pin. Diane Kruger has a foreign accent even though she is the National Archivist, so that our eyes can mist at the thought that in the land of opportunity, even a person with a foreign accent can become the National Archivist. 'National Treasure' is so silly that the Monty Python version could use the same screenplay, line for line. To avenge her death, Madhu returns as an evil spirit to terrorize Rajiv and his family. Trivia In Germany, the film was released as 'American Poltergeist 5: The Borley Haunting'. After the success of the original 'American Poltergeist' film in 2015, German distributors added the title to a collection of unrelated horror films so they could be released in that territory as one single series. This mirrors a similar occurrence in Italy throughout the 1980s when seven unrelated horror films, including 'The Evil Dead' (1981) and 'House II: The Second Story' (1987), were released as the 'La Casa' series. First of all, this is nowhere near a 'horror', it's not even a reasonable ghost story. Neither is it a reasonable thriller or suspense movie, nor a drama worth any weight at all. Just because a film is low budget doesn't mean the fundamentals of film making should be abandoned. If a film is being presented as a certain time period make sure it looks the part. In other words, camouflage modern fitments for starters, even if it means using a bit of painted cardboard!! Modern light switches slap bank in the middle of the frame. Next is don't shoot your own equipment! In several scenes attention to framing is non-existent. For example a massive light rig in the garden during a night scene. Shaky shake works SOMETIMES. Hand-held effects can bring drama to a scene when used appropriately. In this movie it is used far too much when the emphasis should be on the characters and becomes annoying and distracting (someone MUST have watched this before finalising the shoot). Learn to direct. So many many times in this movie the actors appeared to be left hanging wondering what to do next. Long pauses that made actors look like they had lost the plot became another annoyance. As with directing - learn to edit! Many of the annoyances because of the lack of direction could have been addressed in editing. Conversations between characters were often slow and laboured - totally artificial. Make sure your story reflects what you claim. The marketing for this film is as a horror. As in my opening comment, it isn't - nowhere near. Having said that, if the technical problems with the film had been addressed and the actors given direction and the opportunity to rehearse more this could have been an interesting movie to watch. The production team had the equipment, but the lack of attention to detail has yet again let down what could have been a decent film. Directed by Douglas Jackson. Jeremy made friends easily with the same smile and laugh, was quick to put the happiness of others first and always seemed to know what to say when someone else needed help. He also spent his life wanting to be Jenny and had only just begun to show the world on the outside who he was on the inside. “They were the same in every way except Jenny loved playing with makeup, dressing up (and) online shopping for more feminine things,” his half-sister Taneaka Alterio said. “He/she described it best, ‘If you look at my room it’s half RuPaul, half game nerd and the rest comic nerd.’ The outside appearance was the only difference between the two.”. He picked a blonde wig, wore one of his favorite dresses and put on pink nail polish for a selfie and posted it to Facebook. He had opened up to a few friends and family in the years leading up to that moment, but not everyone knew. Sep 14, 2008 Original movie trailer from Her Only Child. Also known as Maternal Instinct or Maternal Obsesion. “I had no idea that she was gonna do that,” his mother, Veronica Gower, said. “She was happy. She called me (and said), ‘Mum. I’m so happy. I’m so happy,’ and I was so proud. That was the proudest moment I have of her. That took guts. That took courage. Everybody should have that same courage.” Jeremy, 30, had decided to pursue becoming a woman — just as soon as the ankle monitor was off. ———— There were some things his mom didn’t know. “I don’t think he ever wanted to disappoint me,” Gower said. Jeremy didn’t tell his mother about the ankle monitor and house arrest until he had to. He had been found guilty of driving under the influence. The situation prompted Gower to have Easter dinner at her Spring Mills home three weeks before the holiday to make sure he was included. He dressed as Jenny that day — the last time they would be together. There, he confided in his mom again about the emotional toll he was going through. The acceptance and support of many could not block out the rejection of others. “Jenny sat next to me on my couch, laid her head on my shoulder and just cried,” Gower said. “She didn’t understand how people who loved her could be so mean.” Gower didn’t know the full story until after Jeremy died April 7, 2016, in his bedroom. An ex-girlfriend, she learned, introduced heroin to him about a decade before his fentanyl-laced heroin overdose. Gower said she never knew he had an addiction, but friends and some family did. “I was preparing him for a life without me,” Gower said. “Every night that I wrote in my journal for her I wrote at the end, ‘I love my son.’ I was just gonna start writing ‘I love my daughter.’ I thought she’d know how much I loved her. I haven’t picked up that book since (she died).” ———— Jenny had a lot to look forward to in 2016 — her transformation, plans to move out of her grandma’s Bellefonte house and being in her mother’s and Taneaka’s weddings. “We were planning on her attending my wedding as my sister, Jenny,” Taneaka said. “I even got her to agree to buy a brunette wig instead of her bright blonde wig. We were so excited to see the resemblance between the two of us all dolled up together.” Jeremy told Taneaka about Jenny in 2006, but there were always signs. He secretly jammed out to TLC with Taneaka when they were children, tried on his mother’s clothes when he was a teenager and let friends put makeup on him when he was an adult. They thought the makeup was Jeremy’s way of giving everyone a good laugh, but it was an outlet for him to be Jenny, even for a few moments. “My most favorite moment is one night after work, we met up for a late night trip to Wal-Mart, since there’s not many people around late at night,” Taneaka said. “I got to help her pick out a cute outfit and some nail polish for a date she had.” Jeremy was happiest as Jenny, his mother and sister said, but some loved ones would not accept him as her. “He could hide his track marks and reasonably function when he was on some kind of high,” Taneaka said. “You can’t hide a bleach blonde wig and bright pink lipstick. He spoke very candidly to me about why. (He said), ‘Doing something, getting high, makes me not care as much about the whole trans thing. I don’t have any other way to block out how I feel and a big part of me never wanted to be like this. I don’t know if I’d rather be a normal junkie (or) a clean and sober trans person.’ ” ———— Gower has struggled with the unknown. Why did Jeremy agree to get high the first time? Why didn’t anyone tell her? Could she have persuaded him to get help? She would have tried. “When you are addicted, you are addicted,” Gower said. “Even when he presented himself as Jenny, she was still using heroin. Once it has you in its grip, there is no getting out without professional help.” Gower has dedicated herself to getting addicts professional help and making others more aware of the signs of addiction. She has sent letters to every politician, media outlet and talk show host she can think of, made a video in memory of Jeremy and joined — a local group that shares her mission. The initiative, which stands for Heroin and Opioid Education and Prevention, pits parents, former addicts, elected officials, police and local organizations against substance abuse. The group’s site lays out the facts. There have been about 60 overdose deaths since 2013 in Centre County. More than one-third of Centre County youth in sixth through 12th grade have taken “prescription drugs from a family member” in their home. Pennsylvania ranks No. 1 for overdose deaths for males ages 12 to 24. HOPE’s mission is Gower’s mission, and she has ideas about what can be done for addicts. She wants a treatment center in Bellefonte; she wants people to learn about addiction; and she wants people who are addicted to get lifelong professional help. “They need to learn how to deal with it, because it’s a lifelong battle,” she said. “Their body will crave it for the rest of their lives. They need to learn how to deal with that craving and how to fight. It’s something you can’t do on your own.” ———— There were friends who tried to stop Jeremy from using drugs. Others were addicts like him. And some still are — they could be next. “There will never be a day where we don’t have to worry about loved ones experimenting in recreational drug usage,” Taneaka said. “However, we can teach more in schools. I feel that while growing up, I learned more about drugs and sex from my friends and the internet than we did in school. I can’t speak for right now, but then there was very little support for LGBT kids and you learned the basics about the different drugs and ‘just say no.’ Knowledge and support, I think, are the key to the possibly finding a solution one day.” Part of the answer, Taneaka said, is also re-evaluating pain management programs. The evidence supports her — according to the American Society of Addiction Medicine, 80 percent of heroin addicts first abused prescription medication. And sometimes you have to ask, like Gower once asked Jeremy if he’d ever used drugs. But he didn’t want to disappoint her. So, he kept what masked his pain a secret. “It bothers me that Jeremy spent the majority of his life suffering in silence, not being able to be who he wanted to be, to be Jenny,” Gower said. “Because I’ll bet there are more Jennys out there. I want them to know it’s OK. I want them to know that people love you, that people will love you no matter what. What’s so hard to believe a person could be born with the wrong sex? I want people to know her. I’m proud of her, and I don’t want her to be forgotten.”. It Happened One Night is among the most gracefully constructed and edited films of the early sound era, packed with clever situations and gags that have entered the Hollywood comedy pantheon. This was the first film to accomplish the very rare feat of sweeping all five major Oscar categories (best picture, best actor, best actress, best director, and best screenplay) In Frank Capra’s acclaimed romantic comedy, spoiled heiress Ellie Andrews (Claudette Colbert) impetuously marries the scheming King Westley, leading her tycoon father (Walter Connolly) to spirit her away on his yacht. After jumping ship, Ellie falls in with cynical newspaper reporter Peter Warne (Cl ark Gable), who offers to help her reunite with her new husband in exchange for an exclusive story. But during their travels, the reporter finds himself falling for the feisty young heiress. Stay tuned after the film for a Cinema Club discussion led by faculty from Rollins College Master of Liberal Studies Program.
